While at its heart a romance, the film delves into deeper societal issues:

Set in the 1930s in the British colony of Sarawak (modern-day Malaysia), the story follows (Hugh Dancy), a young and idealistic British officer sent to a remote outpost to help "civilize" the local Iban population. Upon arrival, he is introduced to a local custom designed to help him learn the native language quickly: the "sleeping dictionary".

The struggle between Western education and indigenous traditions is a central pillar, showing how love can both bridge and amplify these divides.
